God, Religion and similarly tough philosophical matters

“Hey Ramesh, where have you been?” asked Ajit; without moving his gaze from his laptop.

“I am not a loner like you. I went to the movies” said I.

“Come on Ramesh, going alone  to a theater, precisely makes you the same” said Ajit in a matter-of-fact way; fully concentrating on the news article he was reading.

“Aren’t you going to ask me which movie I went to see?” I asked.

“You are going to say it anyway. But for the sake of optimizing the time taken in this conversation, let me ask you, How did you like the movie: Oh My God?”

I was half puzzled and half disgusted. I was getting tired of these games of Ajit.

Ajit laughed out (loudly); “Oh! Stop looking so awe struck; my dear friend, I am Ajit not Byomkesh Bakshi. I just read something”. Then he starts reading like a news bulletin: “OH MY GOD! Shatters many conventions regarding the Almighty in a thoroughly enjoyable way. A must watch. Updated 5 minutes ago via mobile… To be perfectly honest , I did not read such a stupid Facebook status in months now.”

“You haven’t yet watched the movie. You do not have a say” I snapped.

“And I will not watch the movie anyway. The debate between existence and non-existence of any supreme power is going on since ages and it is not going to end. No matter what argument you propose. The problem is, we are debating on something which is completely beyond our knowledge and scope”

“So what do you think? God exist?” I asked? I was in mood of debate?

“I do not know.” Said Ajit.

“Oh! Come on now. You have a opinion about every damn thing.” I was pushing.

“Yes. Precisely. I do not know. Or rather, I cannot know. And because I do not know, I refuse to accept any bullshit ritual that I do not enjoy.”

Yes! The conversation was moving. I was even thinking of a second round of popcorn.  I replied,
“So that is what you think then? Sensual enjoyment is the ultimate thing in life? Where lies the morality then? Where lies the conscience? How do you explain that most of the people are generally good by heart? Who defines good anyway?”

“Morality is nothing but the collective average acceptable behavior of a given society at a given point of time. It is a relative perception, not an absolute virtue. And it is defined by the Government.”

To be continued…
