Travel Guide: 4 Nights and 5 days in Andaman

I visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands in March 2013. Before going there I did a pretty exhaustive study about the place. Based on that here I am presenting a sample 4 nights and 5 days travel plan.

If you want to include Havelock Island in your Andaman trip, you must have at least 4 nights to spend. Due to the mismatch in Havelock Ferry timing and outward flight timings from Port-Blair, you cannot go to Havelock on the day you reach Port-Blair and you cannot take the return flight on the same day you come back from Havelock. So, minimum span of trip including Havelock must be four days.

The following assumes a 4 nights and 5 days trip. Here is a sample travel guide:

Day 1:

Arrive at Port Blair. Port Blair is a small city but very clean and beautiful. Go ahead and check into a hotel. Take bath, have lunch and relax for a few minutes. After lunch visit Anthropological Museum which displays the tools, models habitats, art and handcrafts of the aboriginal tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
At Anthropological Museum, Port Blair
Proceed to Corbyn's Cove beach and relax with a cup of tea in the slanted benches under coconut trees as the sun sets. The route from Aberdeen Bazaar (main market of Port Blair) to Corbyn Cove beach is spectacular. You can even enjoy some water rides in this beach but I won't suggest that. There are plenty of times you can do it afterwards.

In the evening, watch the Light and Sound Show at Cellular Jail where our hundred years of freedom struggle comes alive. Note that the visiting hour for Cellular jail is from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and for light show the time is 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. So, if you might want to break your Cellular Jail visit in two parts. One for Cellular Jail tour, then visit Sagarika Shopping center (or something else) then comeback for the light and sound shows. As Port Blair is a small city, every thing is really nearby.

Cellular Jail at Port Blair

Shaheed Jyoti at Cellular Jail, Port Blair
If you manage to start early you can also include: Samundrika (Naval Museum), Marina Park (another sea museum), Chatham saw mill etc. Most of the museums saw mill and Cellular Jail are closed by 4pm or 5pm so many people break Port Blair sight-seeing into two days. But in my personal opinion, there are more in Andaman other than Port Blair.

Overnight at the Port Blair hotel

Day 2:
Have breakfast by 7:30 am and then reach Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports complex and start a full-day cruise trip to Ross Island, North-Bay Island, and Viper Island. This is usually a complete package and includes cruise between islands, a minimal vegetarian lunch, and a small trip in glass bottom boat to see corals. Start at Ross Island (remains of the old capital). Then go to North Bay Island and try Sea Walking. Finally take the cruise to Viper Island.
Ross Island, Andaman

Ruins of an old church at Ross Islands, Port Blair
At North Bay Island the cruise includes a small trip on Glass Bottom Boats to see corals. You have to pay extra for an extended trip. You can also take a snorkeling trip there to see underwater corals. I strongly suggest trying the underwater “Sea Walking” where they drop you in the sea bed with an oxygen mask. Then you can literally walk under the see and touch the underwater flora and fauna. You can feel the corals, look at the sea anemone as thousands of colorful fishes swim all around you. You can even feed the beautiful fishes with your own hand.
North Bay Island

Sea Walking at North Bay Island, Andaman
After North Bay, proceed for an hour and a half long harbor cruise to reach the Viper Island. Here for the first time you will get a feel of the vastness of the blue ocean. Lunch is served inside the cruise.
Gallow Hall at Viper Island
Many years before the Cellular Jail was constructed, it was the jail at Viper Island that was used by the British to hang the female prisoners. You can still see the gallows here. You again enjoy the harbor cruise while coming back to Port Blair.

Sunset at Port Blair
Overnight at Port-Blair hotel

Day 3:
Take the ferry from Port-Blair Jetty to reach Havelock Island. There are luxurious private boats (Makruzz from Phoenix Bay jetty) as well as Govt. ships. This trip takes around 2 to 2.5 hours through the deep blue sea. Spend some time in the deck and you might see glimpses of Dolphins and Flying Fishes. Try again to see them in the return ferry if you could not see them in the onward trip.
Govt. Ferries that will carry you from Port Blair to Havelock
Check into a hotel/resort. Enjoy some time in the private beach if your resort has one. The water is so clear and waves are so soft, it almost feels like a lush swimming pool. If you are careful you can even spot some tiny Ghost Crabs and Hermit Crabs.

Resort at Havelock Island
Govind Nagar Beach (private to the resort)
By 2:30pm proceed for Radhanagar Beach. This beach was rated Best Beach in Asia by Time in 2004. You must spend at least 3-4 hours in this beach. Waves are smooth, water is crystal clear and the sunset is simply magical. Let the pictures do the talking.

Elephant Rides at Radhanagar Beach
Sunset at Radhanagar Beach
Overnight at Havelock Island resort.

Day 4:
Take the return ferry from Havelock. Reach Port Blair by noon. After lunch you may take a second trip for Port Blair sight-seeing. May be you can do some shopping at Sagarika. Note that Sagarika is closed on Sundays. You may feel the second half of the day is a waste of time but unfortunately there is no way to avoid it. As most other activities start pretty early in the morning, there is not much else to do today.
Cellular Jail Again
Overnight stay at Port Blair Hotel.

Day 5:
Take an early morning flight to come back home with everlasting beautiful memories.

Have one more day to spare? Go to Jolly Buoy Island.

Take a trip to Jolly Buoy/Red Skin Island through Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park. Boat leaves from Wandoor Jetty (~20 km from Port Blair) at 10am. You need to have valid ID proof with you (driving license/pan card/voter ID etc.) and the ticket must be purchased in advance. Have your travel agent purchase the tickets for you. The natural beauty at Jolly Buoy is spell bound. You may also take an extended snorkeling trip here (Rs. 500).

Deep rain-forest in the back and mangroves in the front on the way to Jolly Buoy.
Small Islands on the way are actually tips of underlying mountains
The Jolly Buoy Island
Hermit Crabs
You should have an extended snorkeling trip (Rs. 500 in March 2013) here and see living marine creatures yourself. You can even grab a starfish with your own hand.

Another key thing to note is the different colors if the sea due to the sharp difference in sea depth. You can see the sharp under sea ridges while snorkeling. A marvelous experience.

Too many things dumped midway? Steps to take your dreams to completion

There are two kinds of activities we do. One is the core activity on which we do not have any choice. For example, the stuff your boss asks you to do, or stuffs like going to dentist for an urgent toothache etc. These are your core activities.

But there are other activities that is outside your core activities that you wish to do. But many times it happens that you take up an activity but leave it midway due to lack of sincerity and enthusiasm. Or you think of doing something but never actually do it. The following step by step guide will make sure that this does not happen anymore. These steps will make sure you complete the things that you once started. It may be a success or a failure at the end. But the important thing is that you fought till the end and did not quit midway.

Before taking up a new activity: Plan well

  1. Visualize the end goal. What exactly the goal mean to you? Do you really want that to happen? Or you don’t care?
  2. Fix the means (aka plan) to achieve that goal up to step by step details.
  3. Then ask yourself the following questions:
  4. Can you afford the means: in terms of time, money etc.
  5. Would the new activity affect your existing activities? If yes, what changes need to be done to your existing plans? Can you afford that?
  6. Would you enjoy the means? If yes, great! If no, are you motivated enough to make yourself bear the pain of the means? Reconsider point 1 to see if the goal is really strong enough?

For every point above, write a whole paragraph. Yes, you must write it down. Otherwise, the whole thing will lose importance.

Enjoying the means is really important here. If the end goal is not attracting enough to justify the painful means, you will anyway end up leaving the activity midway. This is a two way process: the goal must justify the means and the means must justify the goal.

We need to take a few more moments to convert the means to a concrete plan. A good plan must contain:

  • Exact work items
  • Identifiable sub steps
  • Well defined completion criteria for all the substeps and the overall plan
  • Timeline for each substeps.

OK. Now you have a goal and have the plan to achieve the goal.

Now let go of the goal and concentrate only on the plan

You are not allowed to think about the goal anymore. Now you just have a daily todo list to work upon. Just do the work for the sake of it. Constantly thinking about the dazzling goal will only confuse you and you will lose sight of the details of the plan.

Adhering to the plan

  • Prepare monthly, weekly and daily work items for the plan.
  • Completion of each sub-step should give you a sense of achievement: that you did your part honestly
  • Do not multitask
  • Adhering to the plan has the utmost importance. Everything else is secondary.

Revisiting the plan

You will inevitably make some mistake while making the plan for the first time. For this you need to reevaluate the plan time to time. While reevaluating the plan do this as a third person. As if you are judging somebody else’s stuff. This will help you in the following ways

  • Decisions will be independent of emotional attachment
  • Decisions will be independent of sunk cost (already invested money and effort)

There may be three possible outcome of this re-evaluation:

  • Continue as it is
  • New plan. For this again consider all the factors that you did while making the plan for the first time; like, does the means justify the goal and the goal justify the means and would it affect other ongoing activities and if yes how much etc. Note that this may involve re-planning your other activities too.
  • New plan with end goal modified.
  • Put the activity on hold for specified period. After which you will again revisit the plan.
  • Ditch the activity: this is not leading anywhere and you are not attracted to the goal anymore.

Note that ditching the activity is not same as leaving it midway as it involves analytical decision making from a third person point of view.

Letting go

There is a possibility that after all the effort you fail. May be the goal was too big for you and you made some mistake in planning. Or may be some external events changed the ball game altogether. You must reserve on to yourself  the power to let go.

But there is high chance that you will succeed

Once you made a detail plan and periodically review it, there is little chance that the goal was too big for you. Or some external events diverted your attention.

Dream big!

God, Religion and similarly tough philosophical matters

“Hey Ramesh, where have you been?” asked Ajit; without moving his gaze from his laptop.

“I am not a loner like you. I went to the movies” said I.

“Come on Ramesh, going alone  to a theater, precisely makes you the same” said Ajit in a matter-of-fact way; fully concentrating on the news article he was reading.

“Aren’t you going to ask me which movie I went to see?” I asked.

“You are going to say it anyway. But for the sake of optimizing the time taken in this conversation, let me ask you, How did you like the movie: Oh My God?”

I was half puzzled and half disgusted. I was getting tired of these games of Ajit.

Ajit laughed out (loudly); “Oh! Stop looking so awe struck; my dear friend, I am Ajit not Byomkesh Bakshi. I just read something”. Then he starts reading like a news bulletin: “OH MY GOD! Shatters many conventions regarding the Almighty in a thoroughly enjoyable way. A must watch. Updated 5 minutes ago via mobile… To be perfectly honest , I did not read such a stupid Facebook status in months now.”

“You haven’t yet watched the movie. You do not have a say” I snapped.

“And I will not watch the movie anyway. The debate between existence and non-existence of any supreme power is going on since ages and it is not going to end. No matter what argument you propose. The problem is, we are debating on something which is completely beyond our knowledge and scope”

“So what do you think? God exist?” I asked? I was in mood of debate?

“I do not know.” Said Ajit.

“Oh! Come on now. You have a opinion about every damn thing.” I was pushing.

“Yes. Precisely. I do not know. Or rather, I cannot know. And because I do not know, I refuse to accept any bullshit ritual that I do not enjoy.”

Yes! The conversation was moving. I was even thinking of a second round of popcorn.  I replied,
“So that is what you think then? Sensual enjoyment is the ultimate thing in life? Where lies the morality then? Where lies the conscience? How do you explain that most of the people are generally good by heart? Who defines good anyway?”

“Morality is nothing but the collective average acceptable behavior of a given society at a given point of time. It is a relative perception, not an absolute virtue. And it is defined by the Government.”

To be continued…

The Whimsical Didi and the Shaheed Rail Minister

These days Didi is giving Ekta Kapoor a tough competition. Especially what happened after this rail budget, news is giving us more entertainment than TV serials. But at this moment, let us pause a while and take a stock of each player’s gain and loss.

Dinesh Trivedi, Member of Parliament from Barrackpore, West Bengal, was little known in India just one year back. Then Didi made him the Railways minister. Still, like every other member in TMC, he was completely overshadowed by Didi. Now in general, that is exactly what happens in TMC. If you have listened to TMC leaders carefully, every sentence they speak contain "our leader Mamata Banerjee" in a mandatory fashion. Either you stay inside the shadow and do everything in the name of Didi or you face consequences like Trivedi. Not all persons can work in such a scenario where: “If you  flatter, you get the chair/ if you not you face the fire”.

After this incident, Trivedi has suddenly become famous all over India. The publicity he has got is close to martyrdom. He himself compared him with Shaheed Bhagat Singh although I personally think that is a little too much. Nonetheless, most people for whom the fare increase is not so much of worry (I guess this will include many people in India) is praising him for the ‘progressive’ budget. At least what is seen in social media, he suddenly has become the hero who fought. Some even seeing a possible PM material in him (at least if you compare him with the muted PM we have now). I think Trivedi had already taken a mental step to go out of TMC. Otherwise he would not have the guts to directly say “You cannot run railways from Writers”. If you judge by the sentiment flowing in social media, if Trivedi quits TMC tomorrow and join any other damn party, he will win from any seat in India.

But alas! The social media is not India and vote cannot be won by a person alone. If you do not have a strong support from the party, there is very little chance that you would be able to do anything on your own. Maybe he didn’t think so far that Didi will raise a whip to all party members to vote against the fare rise. Trivedi is still a TMC MP, and technically bound to vote against himself! Otherwise he would have to resign. This is going to be the exact same scenario we saw a few years back; when then Lok Sabha speaker Mr. Somnath Chatterjee had to resign over the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.

Would Mr. Trivedi become irrelevant after this? Or he will rise as an bigger nationwide leader? Would he leave TMC and join some other party? After this incident, Trivedi has got a general acceptance in the mind of Indians; at least among internet using educated India. In this scenario, many party should be ready to take him once he leaves TMC. He might even join Congress but that would require Congress to sever ties with TMC. That is not a very distant possibility given heavy weight Congress leaders attending Akhilesh Yadav’s oath taking ceremony in UP.

Now Let us talk a little about our Didi. Since past few months, grievances started gathering in the minds of people (again, at least middle and upper-class educated people) over the activities of Didi. Take it her loose comments over Kolkata rapes, or suddenly commenting that bank can not seize farmer's land even if debt is not repayed or removing pass-fail from schools. Also many national matters like Tista water sharing pact, Lokpal Bill, FDI etc. were facing huge challenge from Didi and many people was not entirely happy with that. Now after this incident, most of these people started thinking that Didi has gone completely insane. Many people are suggesting that we should seriously send a psychiatrist or Bob Biswas (a character from the film Kahaani) to her Kalighat home. That’s another popular joke I copied from Facebook.

Now the people who know Didi’s politics, are not that astonished. Didi was always like this: authoritarian, autocratic, and whimsical. She has to decide everything ranging from whether India should allow FDI to what color should be painted on the roadside railings in Kolkata. She needs to understand that it is impossible to govern everything alone and at some point of time you need to delegate responsibilities to others and let them work independently. You cannot decide everything madam.

Now after this incident, most of the people are amused with the tamasha. Didi is giving so much entertainment to the nation that TV serials started losing TRP. The congress is probably seriously contemplating the possibility of getting rid of TMC. But why Didi did this? Why this Kolaveri Di(di)?

Satiating the power equation within TMC could be the reason. This message has reached to every member of TMC that in TMC, Didi and only Didi decides everything. Like what Mukul Roy, the next rail minister candidate said, that he is a party man (read Didi’s man) and does not have an independent opinion. In fact he cannot have unless he wants to be a second Trivedi. That Trivedi did not consult Didi before taking such a crucial decision could be one reason behind Didi’s rage.

What Didi seriously achieved in past few months was to be present in national media headlines constantly. Although mostly in a negative light, this presence will help Didi to be relevant in national politics. Another thing is, by opposing this fair hike, didi kept his populist “Maa-Maati-Maanush” image and would be able to portray herself as a leader who really cares for the common man in the upcoming Panchayat election. Didi has also kept her path clear so that she can protest the inflation and oil price hikes in future. Didi simply does not want gift CPM (main opposition in Bengal) a ready made issue. The actual suffering of people is hardly the case because Didi is still mum on the freight rate increase that took place in 1st March. Unlike passenger fares, freight increase affects people more because the price of daily commodities depend on that. Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has already increased prices by Rs 500-1,000 a ton on the back of the freight increase.

In this setting, many people are talking about another possibility. What if the whole thing is a staged drama by both Trivedi and Didi? Increasing rail fare was almost an unavoidable thing now. But how to do that without hampering Didi’s pro-poor (maa-maati-maanush) image? Now after sacrificing Trivedi this way, Didi will keep her image. Will negotiate and have a partial rollback of the increase. Fare will still increase but a little less than what is proposed and Didi will take the full credit of it. No issue will be gifted to opposition CPM before the upcoming Panchayat elections. For the time being, Trivedi will resign but stay with TMC. The image of Trivedi has already shined in middle and upper class India, and after a few days Trivedi will do a little apologize thing and Didi will give him another important post. This is a win-win situation after all.

Too Hot to Touch: Why branded products are so costly?

It was an lazy afternoon in the weekend when the SMS came. A newly setup mall is giving huge 30-40% discounts on clothes. As freshers who just entered in the list of officegoers, we badly needed clothes. In student life we used a single Tshirt for a whole week. Used the same cloth for attending classes and while sleeping. But in office you do need to look decent.

Me and my friend Ajit got ready and we took an auto to reach the mall. The new mall was big. Really big with all leading brands present there. We came near the men section. We browsed through Lee, Levis, Wrangler, Spyker and even higher priced brands like Adidas, Reebok, Nike etc. Most of the jeans were priced around Rs. 2500 and none of the sandals were below Rs. 1500.

Picking up a random sandal my friend Ajit said to me, "See these sandals? Back at home I used to buy sandals from Sreeleathers or Khadims. They were priced around Rs. 300. And see these, none of these shoes are below 1500. I see no reasonable difference in quality."

I replied, "Brand boss, brand. If you want brands like Reebok, Adidas and Nike, you have to pay the price."

- "But why?" said Ajit. "If the price of the raw material is same, if the quality is same, the price should also match."

- "But the local brands are made by hand. Like I know a couple of families in my native place who sew clothes for some local brands at their homes. They are not permanent employees... they just work on a contract basis and also paid poorly. Whereas the big brands have their own factories across the globe. The people who make the products are full time permanent employees who are treated well, paid well."

- "No sir. Not always true. Just google a bit with 'Nike Adidas factory poor condition' and you will get it. There have been reports that many of the big brands like Nike and Adidas treat their workers poorly. Most of these brands have their factories in south east Asia; in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam. The reports say, the workers live in extreme poverty and face prosecution and physical assault. Both Nike and Reebok have been accused of using sweatshops for production."

- "What is a sweatshop?" I didn't have a clue. In response Ajit opened Wikipedia in his old Nokia and read aloud:
"The U.S. Government Accountability Office defines a sweatshop as an employer that violates more than one federal or state labor law governing minimum wage and overtime, child labor, industrial homework, occupational safety and health, worker’s compensation or industry regulation."

- "And yes," he continued, "the sweatshop controversy is long sticked with brands like Nike and Reebok. Often they spend a few bucks on the factories to stop the shouting media. But soon the fish comes out of the closet. Just google the word sweatshop along with your favourite brand and you will see it."

- "This is gross. I have to think twice before I buy my any Nike or Reebok products in future." I said.

- "Well, NO. Not at all." Ajit clarified. "I have nothing against Nike and Reebok in particular. I am just using the names just to explain easily. Infact, recently both the companies have taken affirmative actions to improve labor conditions. Which is good. Even my favourite jacket carries the Reebok logo. I am not saying anyting against any brand in perticular. Many other companies also try to save money by setting up factories in south-east Asia and with poor labor condition. I am just curious about why these branded sandals and jeans costs so much compared to the local ones. See, having big factories and full time employees is not the answer."

I still tried to justify, "Compared to the local ones, the brands need to support bigger supply chains. Their procedure is way too much complex than the local ones. This requires money. See, they have so many managers and executives."

Ajit snapped, "No company employs executives and managers to increase production cost. That's rediculus. They have the whole big system to decrease production cost. Not to increase it."

Giving up on the shoes, we came near the Jeans section. I picked up a Levis and noted the price tag area. Apart from the 2500 INR price, it listed the original manufacturer. Some Greatway Pvt. Ltd. at Ludhiana.

- "See? This trouser is manufactured by this local company. What Levis does is just marketing. In fact, this is true for most of the brands. They just contract with different local manufacturing facilities spread across the globe. Mostly they prefer countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and China, where it is illegal for workers to organize, and where wage rates are very low. All these companies are besically marketing companies who spends millions of dollars to make the brand. They make sure everybody recognizes the brand logo."

I nodded. What Ajit was saying does make sense. In all the price tags I could see the name of the company only under 'marketed by'.

Ajit continued, "And this explains the illogically high price of the branded merchandise as well. Persons like Sachin Tendulkar or Shahrukh Khan do not come cheap"

- "You mean all the money spent on TV ads are included in the MRP?"

- "Yes sir. And not only TV ads. Apart from the regular advertisement methods like TV, Radio and News Paper ads there are other ways like buying an IPL team, sponsoring F1 race or organizing musical festivals. You might be very amazed to see your favourite brand is bringing Shakira in town but be careful, this event might create an equally amazing hole in you pocket."

- "You mean to say, quality wise there is no difference between the branded ones and the local ones?" This is obviously not true. The branded ones definitely has better colors better designs.

- "I don't exactly say that. The brands can employ expensive designers which the local ones can not. They also have stricter quality control to keep their brand image intact. All I am saying is, even if I admit these factors, the branded products are priced way higher than they should have been. And this is because the price also include the marketing costs. As I said, persons like Sachin Tendulkar or Shahrukh Khan do not come cheap."

- "Then why people buy branded products? Among my friends, nobody wears a pice of cloth which is not branded." said I.

- "You have a very rich set of friends then. Anyway, this is exactly the advertisement campaigns are meant for. The companies do repeated ads, sponsor events, put up hoardings and this way establish their brands. So that, when you wear a Reebok shirt, anyone who looks at the shirt knows that you are wearing a Reebok shirt. Then they portray anybody who does not have the brand as a loser. As if girls are really going to come running to smell your armpit if you apply AXE deodorant. But believe it or not, by repeated advertising they actually make your subconscious believe these stuffs."

I know these situations. Now Ajit will go on alone and deliver a reasonable sized speech. I did not interrupt him. Ajit continued.

"And slowly, these brands become status symbols. Consider you case only. As all your friends wear branded t-shirts you can not see anything beyond that. Because of the advertisements, you will feel like a loser if you wear a shirt of a local brand. I visited a friend once. Even the eggs they eat is branded and carry holograms. This way, the marketing does not remain only the merchant's need any more. It becomes the need of the consumer also. As the money spent in marketing directly translates into brand image, you will not buy a shirt if the company does not spend a part of the price in advertisements. It's like, the consumer is requesting the merchant to charge him extra for the advertisements. Silly. But true."

"Then how does a new brand enters the market? I mean why doesn't a new brand comes which presents equally good product with far less price?" I asked.

"It is not easy. You, the consumer will not let it. To enter the market, it has to put an equal amount of money and effort in advertisements and also make the price at par with the leading brands. If the new brand costs any less, the consumers will typecast it as the cheap brand meant for losers."

"DJ&C for example" I mumbled. The TShirt I was wearing was of DJ&C a brand owened by the Future Group. While the quality of the TShirt was pretty good at much less price, it did not fit well with the Lee Coopers. It did felt like a loser.

"Don't take names. But yes. May be true. By the way, have you noticed how the same quality TShirt/Kurta is priced differently in Fashion@BIG Bazaar, Pantaloons and CENTRAL?"

"Yes." I said. I went to Pantaloons a few days ago and did not find any piece of cloth with price less than Rs 400. But at Big Bazaar there were good quality TShirts at Rs 250.

"This happens inspite of all three of the market chains is owened by Future Group. This is because different chain of super markets cater different market segments. The quality of the product does not determine the price; the pockets of the target consumers do."

I remembered an old joke on Mullah Nasruddin in which the king comes to buy an omlette from Mullah's shop. After eating when the king asks for the bill, Mullah charges Rs 1000 for one single omlette. Astonished, the king asks, "Why? Is the egg so rare in this place?". Mullah aptly replies, "No your majesty. Egg is not rare at all. Rare is a customer like the king". This is so true. Go buy a cup of coffee in any Cafe Coffee Day and you will know. But I didn't understand how buying overpriced coffee or t-shirts can be a status symbols.

Ajit sensed my amazement. "How marketing shapes and steers consumer need is worth another discussion. Have you ever bought a 1000 rupees stuff at 40% discount while the product actually costs 550? And the most interesting part is you didn't actually need that stuff. You just bought it because there were discounts. That's called anchoring. But we will continue talking later. Now I think we are hungry. Let's have some branded foods at KFC or McDonalds. I can only see these two restaurants around."

Retrograde and Anterograde Amnesia

Retrograde and Anterograde Amnesia happened to me at the same time when I (supposedly) fell down from my bicycle last Sunday. The names sound really fearsome but for me the period involved is really small (5-6 seconds of Retrograde and ~30 minutes of Anterograde).

In retrograde amnesia, the subject (that's me) is unable to recall events that occurred before the development of amnesia. The reason in my case was a mild head injury and shock. And I forgot the event of falling down altogether. According to Ribot's Law, there is a time-gradient in retrograde amnesia. Recent memories are more likely to be lost than the more remote memories. So, I lost the last 5-6 seconds before the head injure completely although I was able to remember the events before that gradually within a short time. For the first few hours it seemed that the time (2-3 hours) was a dream. But as people informed me the events that happened in that period, I gradually recollected some of the events (except for the 5 seconds period).

In anterograde amnesia, the subject loses the ability to create memory. There are two types of memory in human brain. One is short-term memory which is used for immediate processing and one is long-term memory which is used as a permanent storage for later retrieval. In anterograde amnesia, the process of writing from short term memory to long term memory is affected. I don't remember what happened during the 30 minute period after the injury. People said, I handed over my bi-cycle to Omair, came back to my room walking, asked my friend for Dettol, called my girlfriend once, took the bicycle keys back from Omair etc. But I don't remember these things at all. In most cases (including mine) subjects loss declarative memory (recollection of facts) and not procedural memory (how to do things).
